Team USA Skater Jonathan R’s speech follows below.

On behalf of the United States of America Men’s Roller Derby Team, thank you!

Thank you supporters, officials, volunteers, organizers, fans, photographers, medics, skaters, and every citizen that helped make roller derby in the United States of America the best in the world!

Consensus and collaboration brought MRDA together, Team USA together, and brought skaters from around the world together for the world cup. Nothing would have happened without you.

We succeeded in our mission to win the World Cup and represent the United States of America as best we could with skill and sportsmanship. And you will be very proud to know that, yes, Team USA won the after-party! God Bless America! Let Freedom Ring!

Union Squares slice Greenwich Villains 244-144

December 12, 2013 by Jonathan R

In the final New York Shock Exchange league bout of 2013, the Union Squares emerged victorious over the Greenwich Villains 244-144. In the first jam, Ladies Knight barely edged out Carnage Asada 3-0 to start what looked to be a close game, but, in the second jam, Jimmy Rage scored a massive 25 points to put the Squares firmly in the lead.

Despite some gallant attempts, the Villains were unable to mount a successful comeback against the stiff penalty kill blocking of Squares skaters including Abe Drinkin’, Filthy McNasty, Harm’s Way, Jefferee, and T-Stop Tornado. Much to the vocal crowd’s delight, a number of fan-favorites, Filthy, Jefferee, Bach Blah Blah, and Tank Lloyd Wright, all took a turn jamming as the game drew to its end.

Ladies Knight blasted through the pack for lead jammer status 11 out of the 12 times that he jammed while also earning the most points for the Squares (82). Carnage Asada’s deft footwork carried him to grab the most points for the Villains (54).
Next year promises to be another great one as 2014 tryout dates and season schedule announcements are expected soon.
