Shock Exchange Plans Australian Tour!

August 8, 2014 by Jonathan R

For the first time in modern history, an American men’s roller derby team is crossing the Pacific Ocean and undertaking a grueling schedule of intercontinental games in Australia.  On January 9-11, 2015 the New York Shock Exchange Men’s Roller Derby Team (NYSE) kicks off its inaugural “Shock Down Under” Tour in Newcastle at the Bont Invitational, bouting against top Australian teams.  From Newcastle, the New York City-based team moves on to Brisbane to face off against the Brisbane City Rollers.  The tour wraps in Sydney with games against the Sydney SMASH Bros and Tasmania’s Bass Strait Brawlers.  “Shock Down Under” concludes on January 18, 2015 with NYSE’s signature intensive two day, co-ed training boot camp.  Says Jonathan Rockey, NYSE’s founder and men’s roller derby most noted player, “We are thrilled for the opportunity to play roller derby and share our experience in Australia.  Our wish is that the trip will fan the flames of excitement after their national championships and encourage more derby around the world.”

Not only does “Shock Down Under” allow NYSE to play for and teach players 10,000 miles away from New York, it paves the way for Australian teams such as Sydney City SMASH, the Bass Straight Brawlers, the Victorian Vanguard, Brisbane Scartel, Perth Men’s Derby, and many more to join the rapidly expanding Men’s Roller Derby Association (MRDA).

As part of the fundraising effort for this historic tour, NYSE will be hosting a party on Sept. 17th at Don Pedro in Brooklyn, NY.  Details are forthcoming on Facebook.

Shockers Bring Thunder to RollerCon

August 1, 2014 by Jonathan R

In the dry heat of the Mojave Desert, the storm clouds gathered, rained, and thundered on July 26th and 27th. The New York Shock Exchange had arrived in Las Vegas, NV.

In the very first Men’s Roller Derby Association game at RollerCon, the Shock Exchange All-Stars played their rivals, the St. Louis GateKeepers. The boisterous, sold-out crowd was treated to a back forth nail-biter as the Shockers held a slight lead at halftime. The 2nd half escalated into a bloodbath and New York fell 153-161. The Shock Exchange would like to wish the game’s head referee a speedy recovery from the injury she sustained.

On Sunday, July 28th, Another sold-out crowd was treated to an intense, highly defensive battle as the Shock Exchange played Portland’s Bridgetown Menace. The first half was neck-and-neck as both teams shut down each other’s jammers. The Shockers took advantage of a few power plays toward the end of the first period to build a small lead by halftime. The second half was a similar story of tough blockers swarming jammers. Again, New York found success when Bridgetown jammers committed penalties. At the final whistle, the score was New York 157, Portland 111.
